Just a few km from Fira, the capital of Santorini on the south of the island lies Akrotiri, a prehistoric town only a 15 minute walk from the Hotel and about 1km by car. Once a Minoan settlement, this beautiful area of green vineyards and magnificent views of the caldera cliffs is now a favorite spot for romance and travelers looking for something slightly off the beaten track.
Apart from exploring the charming town and its picturesque stores, visitors can wander the pebble stone roads and admire the elaborate architecture, trek across the path of Balos, visit the Cape castle or take a walk to the old stone mill. There is something for everyone in this ancient town.
The excavation areas and ancient sites in the area have given up some of the islands most interesting artifacts and can be seen in the museum of Tsambouna, located in the Kastelli of Akrotiri, just a 10 minute walk from the Hotel. Also, walking through the narrow paths of Kastelli, visitors can see the old town of Akrotiri and a marvelous view of the island.
The impressive lighthouse, built in 1892 and the only one on the island is only a 5 minute drive away from the suites and is an ideal location to watch some of the most stunning sunsets and pose for photographs. The famous rock, shaped like an Indian can also be seen from here and there are plenty of unique restaurants located amidst the ruins to sit and enjoy a fresh fish meal or a traditional Greek meal.
While visiting the lighthouse, visitors may want to visit the quaint old churches in the area which are of particular archeological interest, such as the church of St. Minerva, the Church of the Assumption and the Archangel Church, which are nearby or the Notre Flevariotisa church in the castle of Akrotiri, just a ten minute walk from the Avant Garde suites. The beautiful church of St. Nicholas at Red Beach is actually built into a rock and depicts a strong physical element of the island. There is also the popular ‘Cave of Nicholas’ restaurant, decorated with copies of Akrotiriain and serving delicious Greek cuisine.
Finally, there are the legendary beaches of Akrotiri reached by traveling by one of the small fishing boats; the sun-drenched Red beach, one of the most picturesque of the island and home of the well-known ‘The Dolphins’ restaurant, the sandy White beach which is surrounded by high white cliffs and Yialos Balos with its black pebbles stretching towards the dark sea. Each beach unique in its own way.
Other beaches nearby are the Mesa Pigadia Gialos (the starting point of the catamaran cruises that tour around the island), Mesa Pigadia, Kabia and the beach, Caldera, which lies just below the suites and where the diving center is located.
Avant Garde suites are set amongst all this beauty while also being within walking distance of the plaza with its traditional taverns and cafes.
